Alcudia Holidays 2013
Alcudia is a bustling resort on the north coast of Majorca, popular with families and groups who don’t want the noise of clubbing hotspots but still need plenty of fun activities from day to night. The Old Town area is full of history as it used to be Majorca’s capital. There are regular flights to Majorca from many UK airports, making your trip to the sun only hours away. Whether you're planning next year's getaway or you want an Alcudia holiday this year, read on and find out why it's so popular.
What to do in Alcudia
The Old Town of Alcudia dates back to Roman times so there’s a lot for history buffs here. A guided tour of the sights takes two hours and introduces you to the main sights, such as the city walls, the Portal del Moll and the Roman ruins of Pollentia town, including a theatre where outdoor performances are held in summer.
Alcudia itself has a range of great restaurants, old mansion houses and museums. There’s also a local market held twice a week that’s ideal for souvenir hunting. Just outside the town you'll find the popular Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation, which has a sculpture garden, modern art and frequent guided tours. There are special events for children held frequently as well.
One of the biggest attractions on a holiday to Alcudia is the Hidropark, which families will love. With plenty of pools and slides, there are some brilliant activities on dry land as well: everything from bouncy castles and trampolines to paintballing and mini golf. Find it slightly inland from the beach.
The Alcanada Golf Club is a popular place to enjoy a few rounds on holiday. Its clubhouse is a converted mansion which has a restaurant as well as stunning views of the 18 hole course.
The Bay of Alcudia is where most of the hotels, villas and apartments are found, including the Club Bellevue Apartments, and you’re within walking distance of the beach. Boat trips are widely available from the marina, and you can catch regular ferries for a day trip to Menorca. At the beach you can expect beautifully clean sands and water sports such as parasailing, jet skiing, canoeing and kite surfing - it’s a hit with families looking for fun and safety for their kids. English is widely spoken here and you can also fill up on English food as well as local Mallorquin dishes, or you can try anything from Chinese to Tex Mex around the marina.
Day Trips on a Holiday to Alcudia
If you want to explore further then head to Playa de Muro for some seaside variety. Playa de Muro is not in Alcudia itself but is an adjoining resort that makes for an enjoyable day trip. Visit the beach and try out snorkelling or keep the kids entertained at Las Gaviotas.
Cap de Formentor, which is at the tip of the Formentor Peninsular, also makes for a fun trip. You can hike or cycle to this remote part of the island and you'll be rewarded with stunning views. Alternatively, head south from Alcudia and visit the S'Albufera Natural Park which includes forests and wetlands.
Nights Out in the Resort
Evening entertainment is largely centred on the hotels and bars in the resort, with nightclubs such as the Roman-themed Menta, plenty of bars and the chance to enjoy some karaoke. Those looking for big-name clubs would be advised to head for resorts in the southern part of the island such as Magaluf.
Alcudia offers laid-back nightlife, great days out and a fun break that makes it perfect for families, couples or thrill-seeking groups.
