Your Vilamoura holiday 2013
Vilamoura is right in the heart of the Algarve in Portugal, just over 2 hours away from the UK. One of the main tourist destinations in the region, you’ll be spoilt for choice with sports, shopping and nightlife here. Whether you want a sunny family break or a golfing holiday, Vilamoura is the ideal choice.
- Who Goes There: Celeb-spotters, shoppers, golf enthusiasts and people who enjoy great continental food.
- When to Go: Summer is a popular time, but if you're into your sport then you'll know that the Masters Golf is played here every autumn.
- Best Attractions: Head to the marina for sea views and boat trips. There are also several golf courses to choose from, and plenty of bars for a fun night out.
What to do in Vilamoura
The marina at Vilamoura is one of the focal points for activity, both during the day and evening. If you want to treat yourself or buy some souvenirs, this is the place to go, with everything from Cristiano Ronaldo’s designer store to local craft shops. Star-spotting on your Vilamoura holiday is a possibility as the marina is popular with celebrities. Footballer Luis Figo owns Café Sete – named after his player number on the pitch – and fans of the big game will find it’s worth a visit.
Golf is another major pastime for holidaymakers in this part of the Algarve. There are six courses nearby, many of which have been designed to championship standards, and the Vilamoura Golf Hotel is perfect for staying close to the action as it sits between two hotspots, Laguna Golf and the Old Golf Course.
If teeing off isn’t your thing then don't worry. There are two excellent beaches here, boasting clear waters and clean sand. Praia da Marina is one of the most popular beaches in the area, with Blue Flag status, and visitors can relax on sofas and canopied beds at the Puro Beach Club. The other beach to check out is Praia da Falésia, which is backed by cliffs and is very sheltered, so the whole family will love it. For holidaymakers who want to use their sea legs, you can also go dolphin watching or parasailing in the area. Back on dry land you can explore the Cerra da Vila Museum, which has Roman relics.
Around the marina you’ll find restaurants from all over the world, with something to suit every budget, from steakhouses to Indian or Italian food. The Vilamoura Casino provides evening entertainment with a difference, with regular shows as well as gaming rooms. If you’re after something livelier then Portugal’s largest nightspot, Kadoc, should be on your To Do list, with five floors to choose from. In July and August you can also hit an open air club, Bliss, which attracts international DJs.
Vilamoura is a good place to use as a base to explore the surrounding area. Loulé is particularly popular for the castle, the carnivals and the gypsy market, which takes place on a Saturday. It is easy to reach and offers a glimpse of traditional Portuguese life. Albufeira is also close by, which has lively nightlife and lots to see in the day, including Paderne Castle.
Looking for something slightly different? Alvor holidays are just as relaxing as Vilamoura, but with quieter evening entertainment that will suit low-key holidaymakers or young families.
