Holidays in Mdina
Mdina is the old capital of Malta, and a medieval walled town. It is also known as the ‘Silent City’, thanks to the town being pedestrianized, eliminating the noise of vehicles. Mdina is full of untouched history, and a perfect destination to enjoy a relaxed holiday, wandering round the town and taking in the sites. The town is situated on the top of a hill, offering stunning views across Malta.
Mdina enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and short, cool winters with some rainfall. During the summer temperatures hit early 30C, and drop to around 12C in the winter. Malta has an international airport.
What to do in Mdina
St Paul’s Cathedral is the perfect example of Mdina’s wonderful history. Marvel at the beautiful gravestones of Maltese aristocracy encased in the floor, and the wall painting at the back of the cathedral. It is named after St Paul, as according to traditional, the Apostle St Paul is said to have lived on Malta for some time after being shipwrecked. The Norman House is the best preserved medieval building, built in 1495.
Mdina’s Howard Gardens offer a relaxed activity, with beautiful scenery and a way to enjoy the great weather. Or simply wander round the alleys and side streets, free of cars, and taking in the historical architecture.
For a bit of culture, why not visit the Museum of Natural history, learn about Mdina in the Mdina Experience, or take in a show at the theatre. There is also a large annual festival which celebrates the history of the town, featuring medieval music and battle re-enactments.
Mdina cuisine is rustic, and based on what’s in season on the island, as well as the varying influences of Malta’s history. The top local dishes include vegetables, bread, fish, pork and a warming rabbit stew in the winter and the local wine and beer is excellent. In the evening the city is lit by lamps, making a lovely atmosphere for enjoying an evening walk, or to enjoy a romantic meal by candlelight.
