Discover Gozo
Gozo is the sister island of Malta, smaller in size and separated from it by sea. It doesn’t have its own airport, but is reachable by coach/minibus and ferry. Gozo means ‘joy’ in Castilian. It has a rural, green landscape, and the pace of life there is regarded as uncomplicated and simple.
Activities in Gozo
Gozo is renowned for its big annual carnival, which attracts many visitors. The colourful costumes, music and celebrations create a lively and exciting atmosphere. There are also many other festivals throughout the year.
Gozo is steeped in history, and the result is many beautiful buildings which still stand today, such as churches and templates dating back to 3,600 BC. There are lots of museums which chart the town’s interesting history, as well as a Science and Toy museum.
There are plenty of beaches to enjoy Gozo’s great climate on, including Ramla Bay, with it’s striking reddish/golden sands and clear, safe waters for families. Marsalforn is a top tourist spot, with the beach beginning as pebbles before becoming sandy. Benetah the surface, Gozo has plenty to explore for divers, with a range of sealife, wrecks and caves. The sea is always a plesant temperature, and rarely drops between 16C. In the milder, winter months, Gozo is good for hiking, with lots to explore.
If you’ve had your fill of the beach, why not hit the shops. There are markets, boutiques and a mall to pick up some great gifts from. Traditional items to keep an eye out for include baskets, jewellery and lace.
One of the local delicacies on Gozo is goats cheese, along with lots of fruit and vegetables grown on the island, bread and olive oil. The local wine is also very good. The nightlife fairly mellow, with lots of bars and cafes to enjoy a drink in, but there are also a couple of clubs, including a disco in a cave!
