What to do in Assisi
The picturesque narrow, steep lanes make a holiday to Assisi good for wandering and exploring, where you can find many hidden restaurants, fading fresco and some spectacular views of the Italian countryside. Most famously, Assisi is the birthplace of St Francis, founder of the Franciscan religious order, whose followers have filled the little town with churches, monasteries and shrines and is a major centre of Catholic pilgrimage. Everywhere you look in Assisi, you'll find another fine church, mostly built in the pretty pink stone which characterises the town's appearance. The grandest of these, of course, is the Basilica di San Francesco, the important double-decker church built to honour the saint, who lies in the crypt. The lower level is older, and more atmospheric, with stained glass windows, and frescoes attributed to Giotto, Cimabue and Simone Martini. The upper church was damaged more severely by an earthquake, but it is bright and airy and its colourful frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and others can still be appreciated.
But you don’t have to be a pilgrim to appreciate a holiday to Assisi; there is still plenty more to see and do. In early May each year the Festival Calendimaggio is held, a re-enactment of medieval and Renaissance life which includes processions, theatrical presentations, flag-weavers and traditional dances. Local arts and crafts, such as paintings, sculptures, ceramics and reproductions of medieval weapons and tools can be purchased from a variety of shops, and there are plenty of places to eat and drink, with many excellent restaurants and cafes offering local specialities and Italian classics.
