For those taking advantage of cheap holidays to Malia, taxis to the resort can be expensive, but fortunately there is a regular bus service for those on a small budget
Get out and explore on holiday to Malia
If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing time, holidays to Malia may not be for you. The resort really is the party capital of Crete, and as such is a magnet for the 18 to 30 age group. If your ideal holiday is sun, sand and hectic night life, then head for Malia. But if you want a quieter holiday in Crete, check out Aghios Nikolaos holidays
The old village of Malia is a little way from the sea, and it still retains its old world charm; there are some pleasant little bars and tavernas tucked away amongst the narrow streets, and on the outskirts of the resort there are the amazing ruins of a Minoan palace dating from 2000 BC which are well worth seeing. South of the resort there are wooded mountains and pretty villages such as Krasi to be explored for an alternative to the hectic beach scene.
Modern Malia is on the sea side of the road which divides the old and new, and is blessed with three miles of sandy beach which, in the height of the season, can get crowded. There are plenty of facilities for sun worshippers, beach umbrella and deck chair hire, bar kiosks and water sports providers. A quieter beach can be found near the Minoan palace, which is probably more suitable for families having holidays in Malia.
There is a modern marina in Malia, where there are boats offering fishing trips or sightseeing excursions and, for the more adventurous, a diving school. The centre of Malia is full of bars, pubs and restaurants. Finding somewhere nice to eat is easy, with a fantastic variety of restaurants and cuisines. Triton Hotel Malia is a great place to stay if you want to have the quiet side of Malia with in easy reach of the nightlife.
Nightlife in Malia, especially in the central ‘strip’, doesn’t get going until late and goes on 'til dawn, a big attraction for groups of youngsters intent on some serious partying on their end-of term holidays to Malia. For those who can’t get enough clubbing there is a 24 hour music bar just out of town.
