Sightseeing in Brussels

A city break to Brussels offers plenty to see. The ‘Grand Place’ is a good spot to start. This square is right at the heart of the city, surrounded by some beautiful 300-year old buildings and the city tower. At night the buildings become a canvas for sound-and-light shows, providing an atmospheric backdrop for partygoers heading to one of the many bars in the area. Brussels has some excellent museums; attractions include an unmissable collection of both old and new artworks and Europe’s largest collection of artifacts from central Africa. Getting a view of city from the 100m ‘Atomium’ sculpture is also a must, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Antwerp.

The best place to find bargain in Brussels is the district of Marolles, with its daily flea market and plenty of shops selling everything from bric-a-brac to fine china. Those looking for an upmarket shopping experience should head to the ‘Rue Antoine Dansaert’, and the Ixelles district, known for its restaurants and bars, also merits a look around. Brussels is a very culturally diverse city with communities from all over the world, so as you can imagine there are a very wide range of cuisines for you to try. If you are looking for something traditionally Belgian, why not try some ‘frites’ ( whatever you do, don’t call them French fries) from one of the many stalls in the town centre, or if you are after something sweeter, buy a Belgian waffle with cream, equally tasty. And of course, there’s Belgian chocolate, the best selection of which is in the Place du Grand Sablon.

For those who like their beer, this is something else Belgium is world famous for – you can drink beers brewed by Trappist monks, sample tasty fruit beers and quite a few other types of tipple unique to this country.
