Beach holidays in Portugal
Of course, the first thing that springs to mind when people think of beach holidays in Portugal is the stunning region of Algarve, and with good reason – gorgeous sandy beaches, miles of rocky, rugged coastline ripe for exploring, an exceptionally sunny climate, and plenty of exciting activities - the Algarve is justifiably famous for being the perfect beach destination! Algarve isn’t the only place to go for beaches though, in the beautiful north you will find wonderful Atlantic coast beaches, a stone’s throw from majestic cities such as Porto, so your beach holiday in Portugal can be varied and diverse as you choose!
Beaches in the Algarve
Most popular and celebrated of all Algarve resorts is Albufeira, which will have somewhere to suit all tastes, with over 20 beaches, many of which are blue flag awarded. Praia dos Pescadores is by far the busiest and features exceptional beach amenities, plenty of water sport activities, and many restaurants and bars. Families looking for a quieter, more laid-back resort should head to the beautiful Coehlo beach and a little further down the road the beaches of Soa Rafael and Vigia, which are home to dramatic natural rock formations, perfect for exploring. Albufeira is also home to the fascinating Zoomarine centre, the striking Paderne Castle and three golf courses!
Vilamoura is another exceptional beach resort in the Alarve, being ten miles from Faro airport, which is itself a only a two and half hour flight from the UK, it is a great choice for families as transfer time is minimal. With stunning Blue Flag awarded white sandy beaches that slope gently into the calm waters of the Atlantic, Vilamoura is a truly idyllic location. The resort is centred around a glamorous yacht marina with plenty of watersides restaurants, bars and cafes. If you want to combine some action-packed activities with your beach holiday Vilamoura is the perfect destination – there are six golf courses in the area, a riding school, a tennis centre, a shooting range, lawn bowling, a scuba diving club and plenty of water sport opportunities.
One the best kept secrets in the region is the tranquil, unspoilt beaches of Cacela Velha, on the easternmost tip of the Algarve. The village of Cacela Velha occupies an idyllic hilltop position overlooking the Ria Formosa, a 60 mile long natural barrier of sandy islands that is designated nature reserve. The picturesque white sandy beach is a wonderful secluded retreat and is home to many species of birds including eagles. Be sure to visit the dramatic castle, founded in 1143.
Porto beaches and attractions
If you wish to combine your beach holiday with a bit of culture in a magnificent city, then Porto is the place to head to. The north of Portugal is often forgotten by holidaymakers, who head south to the Algarve, but there are many stunning beaches to be discovered there. Highly recommended is the cosmopolitan beach resort of Espinho, just south of the city – which features long stretches of Blue Flag awarded beaches, excellent amenities, and great waves for surfing, rolling in from the Atlantic.
Whilst in Porto make sure to enjoy the outstanding sightseeing opportunities including the UNESCO World Heritage listed waterfront district of Ribeira, where you can explore the winding medieval alleys before stopping for a coffee or cocktail at charming little cafe and watch the riverboats float past. The Museum of Contemporary art the city’s main cultural attraction, which was constructed in a minimalist style by famous Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, and features ever changing exhibitions by the world’s top modern artists.
