Once a picturesque fishing village, St Tropez was discovered by Hollywood in the 50’s and 60’s and has never looked back. Perhaps the best beach is Baie de Pampelonne, and there is always the infamous Plage de Tahiti, where Bridget Bardot frequented in her youth.
Of course, the south isn’t the only place to go for beaches in France, the west coast also has miles of dazzling beaches and wonderful resorts, most famous of which is Biarritz. Glitzy and glamorous Biarritz is just steps away from the Spanish border and attracts a varied international crowd of sun worshippers. The Grande Plage is a perfect golden sandy beach that is popular with surfers, due to the great waves rolling in from the Atlantic. The beach is lined with plenty of chic bars and restaurants, and Biarritz itself is a fascinating melting pot of French, Spanish and Basque influences.
Further north up the Atlantic coast, is the region Vendee which has many, many fabulous beaches, most celebrated of which is the upmarket resort La Baule on the Cote d' Amour ('Coast of Love'). The beach has over 7km of wine white sands, which slope gently into the sea making it ideal for families with small children – a truly exceptional resort.
For an innovative holiday why not head off the mainland to the majestic island of Corsica off the southeast coast. With over 1,000 kilometres of coastline, 200 beaches, imposing mountain ranges, historic towns and picturesque marinas, Corsica is an astonishing place. One of the most famous beaches is the internationally renowned Palombaggia beach, in the south, which has perfect white sands complemented by deep indigo waters, sand dunes and lush pine trees. Calvi, also in the south is a great choice for families, with calm, shallow waters, and near Palombaggia, the horseshoe shaped Saint Giulia Beach is the place to head to for water sports.
A leftfield choice, every summer Paris opens the Paris Plage – a manmade beach on the shores of the river Seine – enjoy the carnival atmosphere, soak up the rays, try your hand at some water sports or take in a free concert!
